A respected 63-year-old Oregon journalist who died of a heart attack after having sex with a 23-year-old woman paid her cash in exchange for sex acts, she told authorities.
Longtime Oregonian editor Bob Caldwell went into cardiac arrest at the women's apartment Saturday and was pronounced dead a short time later at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, the paper reported.
A family friend had originally told the Oregonian that Caldwell, who is survived by a wife and three children, was found in his car.
The woman told authorities she met Caldwell one year ago at Portland Community College. She said that Caldwell offered to pay her cash in exchange for sex, the Oregonian reported. The student needed the cash to pay for books and other school supplies.
No money exchanged hands on Saturday, the Oregonian reported, and authorities declined to prosecute the woman for prostitution.
Caldwell started at the Oregonian in 1983, and guided the editorial board from 1995 until his death. The paper won a Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for a series of editorials about abuses at the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, Oregon.
"However seamy his end, he was a fantastic newsman and one of the real gutsy, honest guys out there," former Oregonian staffer Peter Carlin wrote in an email to Jim Romenesko's media blog. "Used his authority to bring up generations of journalists. Fought for good things at the paper and in the state. I hate to think all that gets ignored because of his gothic, and admittedly disturbing, end."
